2 Oct Atapuerca to Burgos. 20 km
The day began with another uphill climb over very rocky terrain. At the top we were greeted by a cross where we could lay down a stone representing our burdens. Then it was downhill over the rocks To a lovely break for orange juice, (fresh squeezed everywhere here) and pastry. Then another 10 or so km to Burgos along a beautiful river path.
Again, as we came into town people were incredibly hospitable showing the way, and even walking along beside us.
A word about traveling through Spain on a Sunday. Dad and I had an interesting time finding any place where we could eat last night. Everything closes on Sunday. We ended up eating pizza at the only place open in the little town.
And another observation: I had intended to go to mass every day. However, the last three towns the churches have been chained shut. In Villafranca there is a mass on Sunday but only then. It's very sad to see so many churches shut tight.
We are in an albergue that holds 16 in bunks beds. We've been traveling with the same group of women and assumed that today, in such a big city with several rooming options, we would part ways. But as providence would have it, we are all bunk mates yet again.
Buen Camino
