5 Oct.   Castrojeriz to Fromista.  24.9 km

Let's just use the word “exhausted.”  We had an early start, straight uphill, naturally. The incline was steep but mercifully there were switchbacks to ease the way. The same mercies were not extended to the descent. We had planned our breakfast stop to be at a town called “Itiero” about 9 km into the day. However, as we approached the town, the sign pinged right while the Camino trail pointed left. There was nothing on the map for another 9 km. It was several km out of the way to make the detour so we persevered although I will admit to being very discouraged.  Not to mention hungry!

Around the next bend sat a church. Dad rolled his eyes as he asked if I wanted to stop and have our credentials stamped. I rolled my eyes in response. Sure, why not but our hearts were not in it.  But God is good and one should remember to seek angels. For inside that church the pews had been removed and long tables set up and coffee and cookies were served. There was still a small altar and space for prayer but they wore the mantle of hospitality with grace. What a blessing.

We opted to make a longer journey today even in the heat. It's in the low 80s today. The water in our bottles would have brewed a lovely cup of tea by mid afternoon. So we've learned today that it just isn't important to push ourselves and that there are blessings around every corner when one opens one’s heart to see them.

All in all, a good day. Tomorrow we'll be smarter!

Buen Camino
